Frithiof is the latest Viking to join fleet

The tradition of giving planes Viking names has been with SAS almost from the start. And what could be more Scandinavian than the Vikings? Weren’t they true travelers as well?

SAS recently received its second new A330-300 Enhanced  242-tonne maximum take-off weight variant, named Frithiof Viking.

“This longer-range A330 will fit seamlessly into SAS’s current fleet alongside their current A330s and will pave the way for their A350s in the future. The A330s higher take-off weight allows the airline to fly new Asian routes with an operational reliability of well over 99 percent. SAS’s passengers will be able to experience the best-in-class cabin comfort that only Airbus offers,” says Christopher Buckley, Executive Vice President, Africa, Europe and Asia Pacific.

The SAS Environmental Program

SAS’s overall goal is a 20% reduction in emissions by 2015. Fleet renewal is an important part of that strategy.
To date, SAS has taken delivery of 27 state-of-the-art Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-700/800 planes, which have replaced older models such as the MD-80. Fuel consumption and associated emissions are in line with SAS’s target.
The varied fleet of Boeing 737s and A320s allows SAS to adjust capacity to demand and ensures emissions are kept to a minimum. SAS also gives passengers and cargo customers the opportunity to offset their carbon emissions. The emissions calculator can be found at sasgroup.net/miljo, alongside the 2014 Sustainability Report.
SAS has reduced carbon emissions by some 15% over the past eight years and is one of only a few airlines that is ISO 14001 certified – proof that it takes its environmental responsibilities seriously.
