Six great places to drink in Odense

There’s a growing number of great places to go out in Funen’s capital, with world-class wines, cool cocktails and well-brewed beer on tap. Here are six places where you’ll be happy to go to the bar.

S’vineriet vinapotek

Klaregade’s charming wine bar is run by entrepreneur Michel Rex Schiermacker. Although neither chef nor sommelier by profession, he has a passion for fine wine, great food and good hospitality. “What we wanted to do with S’vineriet was create a small, intimate place where everyone feels welcome and where we have time to chat with our guests,” says Michel’s right-hand man, Esben Lundahl. One glass quickly leads to another in this atmospheric wine bar that serves and sells wines from all over the world. They have a decent selection of overseas wines, most of them from America, and there’s something for everyone, whether you’re a connoisseur or not. Try their generous tapas and light bites too, which Michel makes from scratch in the kitchen.

Carlsens Kvarter

Carlsens Kvarter is an absolute classic among Odense’s bars. In the iconic corner house on Hunderupvej hides a real tap room with everything for the beer enthusiast and beautiful features from its past life as an apothecary’s. It was here that Odense learned to drink Belgian Trappist beers in the 1990s and alongside its Belgian range, Carlsens has over 100 different beers in stock, including local brews from Midtfyn, beers by Mikkeller and good old Guinness. At Carlsens Kvarter you’ll meet people from all walks of life and of all ages. Bringing the city’s residents together around a good beer while striking the right tone is Carlsens’ specialty and has been since 1972. A must in Odense.

Grand Hotel Library Bar

There’s something special about library bars. The words of the great thinkers in leather-bound volumes, the dark wood and the deep, upholstered furniture provide the ideal surroundings in which to make your plans to change the world – preferably with a cocktail in your hand. They make excellent ones in the Grand Hotel’s Library Bar, which is not large, but is busy with a surprisingly mixed clientele. Young people wearing hip-hop caps, middle-aged Swedes, Italian tourists and ordinary locals all gather in the library bar’s intimate atmosphere among the books, with soft lighting and music that’s too good to be described as easy listening.

Lalou Vinbar

Lalou is on the White Guide’s list of the 10 best wine bars in Denmark and Thomas Brieghel and Ivan Laursen serve up some fantastic wine experiences here. A glass of the top-priced wine on the wine list will set you back DKr140, while bottle prices range from a few hundred kroner to DKr13,495 for the most expensive, a Burgundy, at the luxury end of the scale. In other words, there’s a wide range on offer and sommelier Thomas Brieghel is happy to guide guests to a delicious wine to suit their budget. The cookery background of the two owners is clear to see in the delicious food they make to accompany the wine – filled chocolates, an Iberian ham that melts on the tongue and perfect toast with truffle cheese.

Privaten

Privaten, situated above Café Kræz on Gråbrødre Torv, is a weekend-only operation that’s a cocktail bar, event venue and food club all in one. Privaten is renowned for its cocktails and its good service and if you like a bar with a tasteful lounge, evocative lighting and music at a level where you can hold a conversation without having to shout, then this is the place for you. Among the signature house cocktails, we recommend the dangerously drinkable Cucumber Delight and the excellent Red Revolution. If you’re in the mood for dessert, French Chocolate delivers what it promises with its blend of cognac, white chocolate liqueur, hazelnut liqueur, orange juice and whipped cream.

Christian 4-tal

Another iconic pub is to be found in one of Odense’s most charming side streets, Vintapperstræde. Christian 4-tal has over 20 ever-changing specialty beers on tap as well as a solid range of rums and whiskies. The staff behind the bar are friendly and knowledgeable and if you’re having trouble choosing, you can always taste the goods before you decide. 4-tal provides a warm pub atmosphere during the cold winter months, while in summer you can sit outside and watch the world go by.
